In
the twin French page of the English one you are reading, I explain
that the term "Art Nouveau" is international, despite competition with Jugendstil an some others, and I
translate to French the excellent definition given by the Cambridge Dictionary:
"a style of art and decoration that
uses curling lines and plant and
flower shapes". But why this page? Because this website has
barely
addressed this important style until now. On the other hand, and above
all, because we learned, thanks to the Cercle de l'Eventail,
that Anaïs Guillot, a student in History of Art (Université Lumière
Lyon 2), wanted to devote her Master's thesis to this subject. Although
this is not our favorite theme, we have, in almost half a century,
welcomed a certain number of objects that meet more or less the above
definition. So we gave this student pics of those fans: we thinkk we
must ncourage all young people who are interested in hand fans, in
particular when they want to devote serious studies to this object,
removing it from the image of feminine futility that the 19th century
too often gave it, as well as that of kitsch tourist object too
widespread in the 20th century.
Below on this page you will see three dozens of somewhat "Art Nouveau"
fans brought to your attention as well as to that of this student. We
hope that you will show her others, which will sometimes be much more
beautiful, to Anaïs Guillot, by writing to her at anais.e.guillot@gmail.com.
